Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure in which a surgeon accesses the inside of the abdomen and pelvis using a laparoscope, without making large incisions in the skin. Laparoscope is a small tube that has a light source and a camera. It relays images of the inside of the abdomen or pelvis to a television monitor. Laparoscopic surgery is very common and is generally safe. The possibility of any related complications is just 1 out of 1000 cases.
To carry out laparoscopy, the patient is given general anesthesia. The surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen and inserts the laparoscope, surgical tools and a tube to pump gas into the abdomen for operating. Post operation, the gas is let out of the abdomen and the incisions are closed using stitches.
Laparoscopy is most commonly used in the field of gynaecology, gastroenterology, and urology. It is now an established procedure for gall bladder stones, hernia repair, appendix removal of uterus, ovarian cyst.
