When should you consult physician about lower back pain?

You need to visit physician if you experience following symptoms:

  • Numbness or tingling
  • Pain due to fall or injury
  • Severe pain that doesn’t improve with medications and rest
  • Pain, weakness or numbness in your leg or arm
  • Urinary or bowel dysfunction

Any of these symptoms are signals of a serious problem requiring treatment.

When should a patient consider surgery?

After nonsurgical treatments such as ice and heat therapy, exercise, injections and medications have not proven effective, your physician may consider recommending surgery. A spine surgery is performed by both orthopaedic surgeons as well as the neurosurgeons, depending on the nature of the problem.
